Save a Life hailed a success as donors double

The Belfast Telegraph’s Save a Life campaign has been heralded a major success after it emerged that the number of Ulster transplant donors had doubled.

The turnaround follows a series of articles in the Telegraph appealing for more donors.

Eleanor Donaghy, regional transplant co-ordinator for the province said she was delighted by the increase in donors and praised the paper for its positive campaign.

Professor Stuart Elborn, head of the Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Belfast City Hospital, also praised the campaign.

He said: “Since the campaign began we have had a number of people contact us about becoming donors. The campaign has touched people across the province.”

The Telegraph launched its donor organ campaign after an Ulster lung transplant patient died while waiting for a donor.

In Ulster there are currently nearly 200 people waiting for transplants.
