Rugby league hero tribute kick-started by Mail

The North West Evening Mail is leading the town’s fight to secure a statue in memory of former rugby league hero Willie Horne.

The appeal was kick-started with a £500 donation from the paper, and editor Steve Brauner is keen to see a lasting tribute created.

He said: “Willie Horne was the greatest sportsperson Barrow ever produced.

“He was also a great friend of the Evening Mail.

“We are very pleased to be able to do our bit to make sure that this fitting memorial to him comes to fruition.”

The fund – also boosted by cash from Furness Building Society – is now open to donations from business and individuals.

The local council is also planning to contribute – possibly as much as £10,000 to the £50,000 target.

Three renowned sculpture-making firms are being sounded out about the work and rugby clubs in the area are looking forward to taking part in a commemorative match to mark the eventual unveiling.

Donations can be made at the Evening Mail offices and through the building society.
