Regional papers join fight for Concorde

Two regional daily papers are now in the race to bring Concorde to their area.

The supersonic jet is due to be taken out of service in October, and the Bristol Evening Post and Hull Daily Mail have both thrown their hats into the ring in the battle to clinch one of the seven Concordes in British Airways’s fleet for nearby museums.

In April the Evening Post launched a campaign to get Concorde 216 – the last built in Bristol – back home as the centrepiece of a new aviation heritage museum, and since then more than 7,000 readers have signed its petition in favour of the move.

Meanwhile the Hull Daily Mail has also launched a campaign urging the authorities with the final say to choose the Yorkshire Air Museum as one of Concorde’s retirement homes.

Mail editor John Meehan said: “The region has already got much to offer visitors including The Deep, our coastal resorts and stunning countryside. Concorde would give tourists an even greater incentive to come here.”

Both Filton, in Bristol, and Yorkshire Air Museum, in York, are on a shortlist of 12 sites which could receive a Concorde.

Others include the Science Museum in London, Duxford Imperial War Museum in Cambridgeshire, Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum in Manston in Kent, Brooklands Motor Sports and Aviation Museum in Surrey and Cosford Museum in Shropshire.
