Red card for Knighton

The News & Star was leading a Red Card Protest at Brunton Park during Carlisle United’s home game against Barnet today (Saturday October 14).

The newspaper has mounted a sustained campaign against the club’s owner Michael Knighton during the last few weeks and is urging the expected gate of 3,000 fans to show him the red card this weekend.

The call is for Mr Knighton to sell up and quit – something the paper and many supporters believe would be in the best interests of the future of the football club.

News & Star assistant editor Nick Turner said: “For the past two years we have campaigned hard in support of Carlisle United and its long suffering fans.

“In past seasons we have had campaigns to help the club avoid relegation. We put on free coaches to away matches and urged fans to boost the gates.

“Now we are joining the fans in calling for an end to Knighton’s ownership of United. The club has now lost six games in a row and can’t develop.

“We know there are buyers ready to buy the club. The fans want rid of him and other directors want rid of him.

“We are upping the ante for the sake of the club.”

In the latest push by the campaign, volunteers from the Cumbrians’ Independent Supporters Association will be handing out thousands of free red cards to fans outside the ground before kick off.

They will be asked to hold them up at the same time at a set moment in the first 10 minutes of play to avoid any distraction of players.

Fans’ leader Brian Hall said: “I want to make it clear to the players that we are not getting at them. The red card is not for them. The team must get 100 per cent support.”
