Readers speak out over building plans

Readers of the North Devon Journal have made their feelings clear about the future of a town centre building.

More than 500 readers have signed a petition calling for the Ilfracombe Town Council’s former office building to be stripped of its status as a Grade II listed building.

When the offices were granted this status earlier this year, Co-op were forced to scrap plans to include the site in a new supermarket development.

As a result, the Journal began its SOLD campaign by printing coupons in the paper and organising petitions in newsagents.

400 people put their name to the petitions and a further 100 people completed the coupons and returned them to the paper.

Now the Journal plans to forward the completed petitions and coupons to the Environment Secretary in a bid to get the decision reversed.
