Readers asked to dish the dirt on dog mess

A newspaper campaign to try to clear the streets of dog mess is calling on readers to dish the dirt.

The name-and-shame fight of the Portsmouth News is listing the 20 worst hotspots for dog dirt and calling for official pooper-scoopers to monitor dogs and their owners.

Under the News’s plans, each official would have a disposable camera to catch the dogs in the act and identify their owners so they can be tracked down in a crack-down on the problem.

Readers are being asked to step forward to fill the roles and get the campaign moving.

And the scheme has received Government backing. Environment minister Michael Meacher voiced his support for Stamp Out Filth, and said: “I am pleased to hear The News is taking this issue so seriously.

“Action of this kind might help beat the obvious environmental problems generated by some dog owners who are irresponsible and just don’t bother to think about the health hazards they help create.

“If the campaign is a success, Portsmouth will be a better and cleaner place to live in and visit.”
