Readers' amazing achievement

The Hull Daily Mail’s charity of the year has raised its first £10,000 – and is a quarter of the way to its target.

The money raised by readers will help pay for two minibuses for Hull and East Riding Institute for the Blind.

The vehicles will take people to the institute’s day centres, including a new facility in Hull.

Mail assistant editor Marc Astley said: “This is a tremendous achievement by our readers who never cease to amaze me with their generosity.”

Support has come in a variety of ways with large and small donations and events to bring in more cash.

Marc said: “We cannot remember an appeal starting so well.

“The way the campaign is going, we should have a minibus on the road very soon. That will be a proud moment for us all.”

Contributors include a bingo fan who donated all her winnings, youngsters on a police project, a restaurant that organised a golf tournament, anglers who ran a fishing contest and pub-goers.
