Protest attracts 3,000

More than 3,000 people have contacted the Aberdeen Evening Express to back its protest at traffic chaos caused by the closure of a major city bridge.

The paper’s Cut the Jams campaign was launched after Grandholm Bridge was closed by the owner, developers Cala Homes, diverting 3,000 cars onto roads in the city.

Predictably, the result has been long traffic jams and massive delays for motorists.

Cala Homes wants the bridge to be reserved for residents of a new housing development being built on the other side of the bridge.

But the Express is calling for Aberdeen County City Council to adopt the bridge and allow traffic to use it.

And 3,000 readers have already backed the scheme by calling a special phoneline as well as registering their support on the Internet. There were 1,953 calls and 1,127 got in touch through the Internet.

Now the Express is planning a petition to further reflect the mood of drivers and residents whose lives have been affected by the move.
