A Shropshire Star campaign has been praised as a model for all newspapers at a prestigious conference of top-ranking police officers.

During a day-long seminar at West Mercia police headquarters in Worcester, the paper’s Beat The Street Bullies campaign was hailed as a perfect example of how newspapers could play a lead role in crime fighting.

Senior officers from forces all across the country attended the event, which was arranged following the enormous success West Mercia force has had in combating street thugs.

The paper’s campaign urged members of the public to ring in with their experiences and also “named and shamed” thugs by publishing their pictures.

During the seminar Chief Superintendent Peter Wright singled out the Shropshire Star for praise, urging other forces to build up similar relations with their local newspapers.

He said: “The Star’s Beat The Street Bullies campaign was mentioned on a number of occasions and was put down as one of the 10 key points at the end of the session.”
