Power station demolition follows Echo campaign

Demolition workers have begun knocking down one of Lincoln’s most infamous eyesores in a move which marks victory for the Lincolnshire Echo’s Clean it Up campaign.

The demolition comes 26 years after the St Swithin’s Power Station was vacated.

The Echo – and its readers – agreed it had become a notorious blight on the city skyline.

The litter-strewn site became a haven for drug users, illegal rave-goers and travellers.

Echo editor Mike Sassi said: “Last year the Echo began a concerted effort to highlight the desperate need for the whole area to be cleared and cleaned up.

“The problem, as ever, was money. The site’s owners – who don’t live anywhere nearby, have long been unwilling to put their hands in their pockets.

“Now, at last, they appear to have been persuaded to recognise their responsibilities.

“Which, of course, is welcome news for anyone who has the interests of our great city at heart.

“It is always sad to see a part of our industrial heritage disappear. But in this case it couldn’t come a moment too soon.”
