Post's phonecard success

A newspaper campaign to protect women clubbers in Bristol is being hailed as a massive success.

The Bristol Evening Post printed thousands of phonecards as part of its Clubsafe appeal.

The cards were distributed amonst women clubbers and allowed them five minutes free talk time to call a taxi.

The campaign was launched following a number of high profile city centre attacks.

Former Atomic Kitten lead singer Kerry Katona gave her support and recorded a ten-second safety message for the cards.

Now, new figures have revealed just how succesful the cards have been.

Between December 27 and January 2, they were used to make a total of 1,085 calls.

And 76 per cent of calls were made from public call points which suggests that the cards are being used for what they were intended.

PC Polly Johnson, of Avon and Somerset Constabulary’s Crime Reduction Strategy Unit, said: “They reinforce what we hoped would happen.

“And that is that the cards are used by women on a night out to call taxis from phone boxes.”
