Post campaign helps fire deaths hit record low

Nottinghamshire fire deaths have hit a record low thanks to a joint fire service and Evening Post campaign to fit smoke detectors in homes.

Three people died in house fires in the year up to April compared with six in the previous 12 months, and is the lowest ever figure for the county.

The Post’s Sounding the Alarm campaign, which was launched in June 1999, saw an extra 10,000 extra smoke detectors installed in homes.

And fire chiefs estimate more than 200,000 properties now have the vital devices – the main reason for the cut in deaths and injury.

Chief Fire Officer Paul Woods said: “We are delighted with these figures. It is wonderful to know that fewer and fewer people each year are being killed or injured by a fire in their home.

“Our thanks go to the Evening Post which has played a big part in passing the fire safety message to the public.”
