PO closure threat sparks major News campaign

News that 14 of the town’s post offices are to close has spurred the Bolton Evening News in to action.

The paper ran a front page showing photographs of all offices due to close to launch its Save Our Post Offices campaign.

It has also printed a coupon for readers to fill in and send back, as well as petition forms.

In the first week, more than 1,000 readers returned the coupons and several offered to join the campaign and asked for petition forms to take to their communities. One of the town’s MPs is also backing the cause.

Deputy editor Ian Savage said: “We were very concerned as a newspaper on the effect that closing 14 urban district post offices would have on the communities they serve – especially the effect on the elderly.

“Many of these are convenient for the older members of the community and to take them away robs them of a lifeline and at the very least turns a simple task like collecting a pension into a much longer journey, perhaps involving a bus where before the post office was just a short walk away.

“We understand there are complex business reasons why some of these offices are closing, but that does not lessen the impact on the communities they serve and we will campaign vigorously to try to keep them open.”
