PM backs move to drive out the dumpers

Prime Minister Tony Blair has personally endorsed the Reading Chronicle campaign to sweep eyesore wrecked cars off the streets and drive out the dumpers.

In a story that made the front page lead Mr Blair said: “I’m delighted to offer my support to the Chronicle’s Wreck Watch campaign – an initiative which shows this paper is right at the heart of its local community.

“The partnership between the paper, its readers and local councils to identify and remove abandoned cars is helping make sure Reading is a better place.”

Reading East MP Jane Griffiths, who raised the issues of untaxed and abandoned cars in Parliament last month, said: “I’m pleased the issues raised in the Chronicle’s campaign are being taken so seriously that the Prime Ministeraddresses it himself.”

Since launching its Wreck Watch campaign the Chronicle has been inundated with calls from readers reporting dumped cars all over the area and now runs a weekly Wreck Watch column.

Series editor Adrian Seal said: “The Wreck Watch campaign is evidence that the Chronicle is really in touch with what matters to its readers.

“It is a real issue in the town and the response has proved that we are right to campaign to rid our streets of these unsightly vehicles.”
