Petition handed over to save the 'Mat'

A campaign petition from the Paisley Daily Express to save a maternity hospital from closure has been presented to health bosses.

‘The Mat’ acts as a vital service for mothers in the area and without it, women would have to travel further – to Glasgow or Greenock.

More than 18,000 signatures have been collected. The strength of public opinion has given protestors a renewed confidence that the hospital will be saved.

“Eighteen thousand people backed the Paisley Daily Express campaign to save the Mat, and it’s time that was recognised,” said midwifery sister Anne Duffy.

The event is part of a continuing consultation process that ends on June 13.

A health board spokesman said: “All the comments that we receive during the consultation process, including any petitions received on the options for the future, will form part of the recommendations which will be put before the NHS board in July.”
