Parliament to learn of Daily Press plea

A campaign to protect sunken warships from rogue divers is heading for the House of Commons.

The Western Daily Press launched a move to Let Them Rest In Peace after reports that vessels lost in battle over the last 100 years are being plundered by souvenir hunters.

It wants the Government to push for an international agreement to put a ban on diving around sunken boats.

And now the cause has been taken up by three Westcountry MPs who have tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons for the Government to act.

MPs David Heath, Brian Cotter and Doug Naysmith plan to raise the issue.

Meanwhile, hundreds of readers have filled out coupons printed in the paper urging the Government to address the problem.

Brian Cotter said: “The Western Daily Press has done a tremendous job in highlighting this issue in the West.

“The campaign has been strongly backed by people throughout our region and I’m confident that a great many MPs will support my call in Parliament.

An Early Day Motion is a way of gauging whether an issue would be supported in Parliament. The motion is drawn up and can be signed by other MPs.
