Paper prompts new bid to lure back passengers

An Exeter Express and Echo campaign to get First Great Western to improve its service has been boosted by news of a new flat fare.

The rail operator had planned only to offer a free cup of tea or coffee to delayed passengers.

Now the firm is set to give cheaper-than-average fares because of speed restrictions due to repair work in May, and while older rolling stock is temporarily replacing high speed trains in the summer.

Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw, who is backing the Echo campaign, said: “It is certainly better than what they were offering two months ago. I am sure the pressure we have put on has helped.”

John Main of the Rail Passenger Committee consumer watchdog, welcomes the move, but feels extra measures should also be brought in.

“It might work on the Devon and Cornwall line where there is more space but once you get to Newbury it is packed full.”

He also wanted to see extra trains and carriages introduced to cope with the increase in passengers, and compensation packages offered to regular users who have had to put up with the delays.
