Paper launches its own battle to mark anniversary

The Shropshire Star has launched the biggest appeal in its history as part of its celebrations to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Shrewsbury.

July 21 will see the 600th anniversary of the historic event.

And ahead of the occasion the paper is rallying its readers to help raise £200,000 to help build a specialised children’s cancer treatment unit.

The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital has been trying to raise £600,000 for a new building to provide a protective environment for children to receive chemotherapy and care, but there is currently a shortfall of £200,000.

So the newspaper has organised a host of events to coincide with the battle anniversary to help raise the money needed.

And the paper is also planning a special supplement which it hopes will include the work of schoolchildren in the area.

To get the ball rolling the Star has produced a special preview detailing how the Battle of Shrewsbury was fought, and telling readers how they can get involved in commemorating the event while raising funds at the same time.

The Star’s main event will be an Eve of Battle Sponsored Challenge on Sunday, July 20, which will see 600 walkers and 600 runners tackling the eight-mile round trip from Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park to the Battlefield Church and back.

There will also a summer picnic on the banks of the Severn, where visitors will be able to enjoy a Battle of Shrewsbury classical prom and firework display in The Quarry on Saturday, July 5, and a commemorative Battle of Shrewsbury glass paperweight has been produced for readers to buy.
