On the way to saving lives

A campaign by the Aberdeen Evening Express, which aims to find 600 new and lapsed blood donors, is two thirds of the way there.

The 400th donor rolled up their sleeve to part with a pint last week.

Only 18 days after launching the Life Blood campaign, the newspaper was today well within sight of its target.

Backing up the campaign, the newspaper has run human interest stories on people whose lives have been saved by blood transfusions, and details of local donating sessions.

One big boost came when a New Donor Day was held at Aberdeen Football Club’s ground.

Lynne Boyd, from the Aberdeen and North-east Scotland Blood Transfusion Service, said: “The publicity we’ve had and the awareness it has received has been fantastic.”

She added: “The Life Blood campaign really jogged the memories of lapsed donors and prompted them to start donating again. Plus a lot them jumped at the chance to meet some famous football players.”

She told the newspaper: “The campaign has just been absolutely wonderful and given blood stocks such a massive boost. Without your readers’ support, this month’s supply would have dropped significantly and we would have had problems. The Evening Express has helped us keep our heads above water.”
