Nursing newcomer to get her dream chance

The Derby Evening Telegraph campaign to bring a young African woman to Derby to train as a nurse, has come to a successful conclusion.

Telegraph readers raised £3,500 towards the studies of 23-year-old Delia Matewere from Malawi.

Three years ago Delia did her GCSEs at Mackworth College in Derby, but circumstances forced her back to Malawi before she could enrol for a nursing course.Delia began corresponding with her former tutor, Zena French, who later asked the Derby Evening Telegraph for help.

Her sad story encouraged people of Derby to raise money for her to get the opportunity to do the nursing course.

She will carry out her studies at the Prince Charles Avenue College, which will later allow her to enrol on a full-time pre-registration course.

Delia will be coming back to Derby on Sunday, July 29, thanks to the generous readers.
