North East newspapers unite in fight for steel jobs

Newspapers and radio stations in the North East are joining forces in the battle to save steel jobs in the region.

The Hartlepool Mail, Northern Echo, Middlesborough Evening Gazette and Newcastle Journal have teamed up with local station, Century Radio, to maximise the pressure on Corus to review the extent of job cuts in the region.

The papers are urging readers to sign coupons supporting the campaign, which will climax with a dossier of material – published in the four papers and broadcast on radio – being presented to Corus officials.

Paul Robertson, editor of the Evening Gazette, said: “I am delighted to join forces with the other newspapers in a bid to reverse the decision by Corus to axe so many jobs and to secure the long-term future of steel production on Teeside.

“We have received hundreds of coupons and letters in support of the campaign and we have a two week window to put forward a strong case.

“It is important traditional rivalries between all media are cast aside. We need to go forward with a united front.”

Corus announced last week that it is to shed 6,000 jobs across the UK over the next three years.

Fifty-six are set to go at one of the two pipe mills in Brenda Road, Hartlepool, and 234 jobs will be axed at the steel planting mill in Redcar.
