No mention of Swindon

The Evening Advertiser is launching a campaign to include Swindon in a top tourism guide.

The town is missing from the Rough Guide, which is currently compiling its 2002 edition.

But despite its inclusion of market towns like Marlborough, and attractions such as Avebury and Silbury Hill, Swindon won’t get a mention.

The decision is causing uproar in the town, famous for its railway history, parks, shopping and entertainment centres.

The Advertiser quotes a spokesman for the guide as saying: “Most people who buy our book are Americans or Europeans.

“They are more interested in places with historic interest.

“That is why we feature Avebury and Marlborough and not Swindon.

“The town may have good shopping facilities and cinemas but these have limited appeal to many tourists.”

But she added that the publishers would listen to opinion that might persuade them to change their minds.
