Nine-page special says"We're open!"

National Assembly deputy leader Mike German made a flying visit of West Wales tourist attractions – and gave a pat on the back to the South Wales Guardian’s We’re Open campaign.

The Ammanford-based weekly ran a nine-page special edition days before Mr German’s visit to Carreg Cennen Castle, in Trap, and the National Showcaves of Wales, Dan Yr Ogof, in the Swansea Valley.

The politician was helping promote Welsh tourist attractions in the run-up to Easter in the wake of the foot and mouth crisis.

His message echoed the Guardian’s own message to readers to support tourismbusinesses in the countryside by visiting those that were open as usual – and not to be put off by foot and mouth.

The Guardian presented a copy of the We’re Open paper to Mr German to emphasise the paper’s commitment to sensible reporting of the crisis itself and the open for business message being promoted around the country.

Mr German told the paper: “Congratulations. This is exactly what the tourism industry needs, well done.”

Following Mr German’s visit an advertisement from the National Assembly wasplaced with the paper giving foot and mouth advice and help.

The advert had previously only been placed in daily papers in Wales.
