NHS Trust chief praises paper

Swansea NHS Trust chief executive David Williams has praised the South Wales Evening Post and its readers for the success of the paper’s cancer appeal and fund.

The Evening Post Cancer Appeal, which closed on March 31, raised £725,869 in just 18 months which went towards building the £1 million South West Wales Cancer Centre in the grounds of Swansea’s Singleton Hospital. The first stage of the centre opened in May.

The on-going Evening Post Cancer Fund has raised £58,000 in just five months and this money will provide new equipment, buildings and services including helping to kit out the new centre.

During his annual report to a trust board meeting, Mr Williams paid tribute to the many fund-raising events organised by Evening Post readers for both the appeal and the fund.

He said: “The South Wales Evening Post Cancer Appeal has brought together the South West Wales community, the main newspaper in the area and the health service.

“I think it is a magnificent achievement. Since then the moeny has still come flooding in with the Evening Post Cancer Fund. We have nearly £60,000 in that fund, so I think we have achieved a great deal.”
