New kind of phone message to boost paper's campaign

As part of the Bristol Evening Post’s Save Our Streets campaign, BT has donated all the interior advertising space in nearly 100 phone boxes across the city to carry a personal safety message.

A total of 96 special kiosks are now including the message: Action on Street Crime. Don’t be a victim of the street. Be Alert! Be Aware! Be Safe! Keep your possessions with you at all times.

It’s the first time BT has linked with a local newspaper in this way and was prompted by an approach from the paper’s current affairs editor, Chris Maguire, who is co-ordinating the campaign.

The partnership was launched at a special photo opportunity by the Evening Post’s deputy editor Stan Szecowka and Rukhsana Mashood from BT.

Save Our Streets was launched in September to reclaim the streets from muggers, and is already paying dividends.

The robbery rate in Avon and Somerset is down by five per cent – compared to a 77 per cent increase in 2001.

Through the campaign 2,500 personal safety alarms have been sold, 10,000 mobile phone security coupons have been distributed and a Save Our Streets website has been set up, attracting 850 hits in just seven weeks.
