New effort to tackle breast cancer

A new appeal is being launched by the Bolton Evening News, together with the Cancer Research Campaign, with the aim of saving lives and wiping out breast cancer within ten years.

The Bolton Busting Breast Cancer Campaign aims to raise £500,000 over the next two years to fund the research of scientist Dr Rob Clarke in Manchester.

It is his work with cells which could eventually halt breast cancer even before it develops, and save the lives of hundreds of women in the Bolton area who die every year from the disease.

Evening News editor, Mark Rossiter, said: “The Bolton Evening News has promised to back this campaign all the way, and we know that the Bolton public will help. We want to beat cancer, and this is an absolutely vital step in that battle.”

Nationally, the breast cancer survival rate is 74 per cent, but in Bolton it is 70 per cent. With the help of this new campaign it is hoped a 100 per cent survival rate will be reached.

Cancer Research Campaign spokesperson, Denise Morgan said: “With just a couple of pounds from every member of the Bolton community we could fund Dr Clarke’s research.

“We want to give him the tools to make breast cancer nothing more than a hiccup of advancing age. Through this appeal, we will ensure his contribution makes an impact.”
