More drivers Staying Alive

A dramatic drop in road deaths in Lincolnshire is being seen as an indicator of the success of the Echo’s Staying Alive programme.

The accident and fatality figures are the lowest for five years with deaths down to 68 from 104 and serious injuries falling from 684 in 1999 to 495 in 2000.

Staying Alive partners, which include the police, health authority, councils and the Highways Agency, have vowed to continue their work and not become complacent.

Initiatives under the programme include putting up signs along main roads to alert drivers to the number of people killed on the county’s roads each year.

There is also a rehabilitation and education programme for motorists who commit minor offences.

Lincolnshire police head of traffic support, Inspector Greville Burgess, said: “We cannot claim all the credit for the figures this year but I believe slowly but surely we are having a beneficial effect.”
