Mercury to tackle ministers over scan waits

Government ministers are being urged to tackle the hidden hospital waiting list for MRI scans after the Leicester Mercury spoke up on behalf of its readers.

Some people had written in saying they were waiting up to 18 months for the important health-checks.

The paper said officials were so concerned about the figures they were introducing new guidelines about the scans and acceptable waiting times.

The Mercury is urging the Government to issue national guidelines and devote resources to keep down the waiting lists by buying new scanners, or hiring them from the private sector.

The magnetic resonance imaging gives a three-dimensional image of the body and can be used to diagnose problems from a brain tumour to a twisted ankle.

Urgent scans are given immediately.
