Masts are put on the map

The Brighton Evening Argus is celebrating again after the Government announced it was to set up a national database giving details of all mobile phone masts.

This meets a key demand of an Argus campaign, Put Masts on the Map, launched earlier this year and which has gained the support of MPs, councillors and readers.

The Internet map will indicate the locations, height and maximum poweroutput of each transmitter and should be on-line in the next 12 weeks.

Planning minister Nick Raynsford unveiled the news just a day aftervisiting Brighton when he hinted at the announcement and said it was vital that masts were sited sensitively.

He has also strengthened the requirement to hold a public consultation onany bid to build a mast below 15 metres, making it the same as a fullplanning application – the other key demand of the Argus campaign.
