Manchester's vice scene revealed

The findings of a major investigation by the Manchester Evening News into the city’s vice scene have been revealed in the newspaper.

The investigation reveals the lives of pimps – and it names and shames two men who make money from prostitutes.

The newspaper also spoke to the mother of a murdered prostitute, a pimp and several women working the streets of Manchester.

Last year the city’s red light district saw a 20 per cent drop in crime following the MEN decision to name and shame kerb-crawlers.

The newspaper took a similar decision when it chose to name two men who pimp women in the city centre.

The MEN watched as Jeanias “Genghis” Khan and Roy Hilton Bailey lurked around the city’s red light district, controlling two of several prostitutes they are believed to have working in the area.

Manchester’s prostitution problem is now so serious the Home Office is spending £100,000, along with £30,000 of European funding, to employ specialist workers to help women who are on the streets.

During the course of its investigation the newspaper spoke to several prostitutes who told the newspaper about their everyday lives with astonishing frankness.

It revealed the frightening and dangerous risks the women take in order to make money, most of which goes to their pimp.

The MEN also spoke to the mother of a woman who had died after turning to prostitution to fund a drug habit.

The mother urged for more support to be given to women who feel their only option is to turn to prostitution.

She said: “Girls don’t go out for pleasure. There are loads of them who do it to support a drug habit or bring up children and they take their lives into their hands everytime they do it.”
