Making a fuss over thelack of a bus

Hull reporter Graeme Paton endured a day of public transport misery to highlight the shortcomings of the region’s rural bus services.

The writer was sent out as part of the Hull Daily Mail’s new series of investigative articles.

His task was to travel from the tiny Yorkshire village of Gransmoor to the nearest town, Beverley, using the council’s new book of bus timetables.

And whilst the trip would have taken him twenty minutes by car, by bus the journey time totalled two-and-a-half hours and involved a detour to Bridlington.

Graeme said: “It’s a life thousands of people in similar communities across the country have to cope with everyday – and it isn’t pleasant experience.”

The Mail used the investigation to highlight the lack of government support for rural public transport.

It argued that whilst the trip from Gransmoor to Beverley was a nightmare, many villages in the region didn’t even have a bus service.

In an impassioned editorial comment piece, the paper said: “This is a situation that should no longer be tolerated, particularly in a green era when governments never to cease to remind us of the virtues of leaving the car at home.”
