Major appeal marks anniversary

The Wakefield Express has launched a major appeal to beat breast cancer as part of its 150th anniversary.

The newspaper is aiming to raise £160,000 for a digital stereotactic mammography machine for women living in the area.

The equipment helps detect cancer quickly and exposes patients to low x-ray radiation levels.

The new equipment will replace the current machine which has a shelf life of eight years and was installed ten years ago, and will be housed in a larger, newly-refurbished room at Clayton Hospital.

Express editor Ed Asquith, said: “This machine will mean a much better quality of service for the women of Wakefield.

“Having a mammogram will be quicker and easier and will cut down appointment length enormously, allowing the team to see more people every day.”

The Wakefield Express will celebrate its 150th anniverary in March.

The first copies of the newspaper were produced on a press powered by steam, and cost four-and-a-half old pence.

Since then the newspaper has grown and now has five-editions with three sections of sport and leisure, motoring and property, and is the flagship newspaper of the Yorkshire Weekly Newspaper Group.
