Mail urges readers to shop dodgy dealers

The Hull Daily Mail is urging readers to blow the whistle on dodgy dealers who sell stolen goods.

Street crime has become so rife in parts of Hull that many areas are now in decline.

One area that has clearly been effected by petty crime is Gee Street in Hull.

There are a soaring number of empty houses, and one house in the street, which is up for sale by auction, was once valued at £30,000 but is now likely to fetch about £4,000.

Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator for the street, Fred Johnson, believes the area is being brought to its knees by high crime levels and lack of investment from Kingston upon Hull City Council.

Fred is also regularly offered stolen goods.

He said: “Since January, I have been offered drugs, CD players, CDs, video cameras, video recorders, Gameboys, portable TVs, full-size TVs, laptops, jewellery, cigarettes and even a pair of curtains still wrapped in Boyes packaging.”

To try to combat this downward spiral, the Mail is joining the fight against thieves by urging readers to contact the paper with details of anyone who is profiting from people’s misery by selling stolen goods.

The paper will pass all information it receives on to the police to halt the city’s crime cycle and stop others from suffering at the hands of the thieves, who often steal to fund drug addictions.
