Love in a box from Carlisle

The News and Star in Carlisle has launched its popular Love in a Box scheme for Christmas.

The idea is to send shoeboxes packed with Christmas goodies to youngsters in orphanages in Romania, Albania, Belarus and Bosnia.

The paper is working with charity Children In Distress to send a gift to children who would otherwise have nothing.

Many of the children are suffering from terminal illness and the stark message from the News & Star is: “A Christmas shoebox from you might be the last gift they receive – and will show a dying child that somebody somewhere is thinking of them.”

Children In Distress founder Dr John Walmsley said: “When the children come to us they are alone, rejected and often near death.

“With good nutrition, basic medicine and some tender loving care from our British volunteer nurses, they can transform children from near skeletons to mischievous normal kids.”
