Local victory for Cornishman

Fowey residents have thanked the Cornish Guardian for the part it played in their victory over mobile phone giant Orange.

The newspaper has been credited with forcing the company to abandon plans for a 20ft phone mast on a nearby industrial estate.

Members of a group set up to fight the plans say they couldn’t have won the battle without support from the paper, which has regularly published features about the campaign.

The Fowey Campaign to Relocate the Orange Mast was formed when Orange was given planning permission after a public inquiry.

Despite the inquiry ruling in favour of Orange, residents were unconvinced about the safety of the mast and they vociferously protested against the plan.

Residents. including Russ Lindsay, the husband of TV personality Caron Keating, began legal proceedings against the mobile phone giant to try and reverse the decision.

Now Orange has signed a legal agreement to find a different location for the mast, in return for the action being dropped.

And jubilant residents have been quick to acknowledge the part the Cornish Guardian played in publicising the campaign.

Parent Julie Giles said: “The Cornish Guardian has helped to pull the whole community together and to keep us battling on, and I feel we have become stronger as it went on.”

Headmaster John Dickinson said: “The local media has helped tremendously in keeping the Fowey mast story alive. That put us in a strong position and I’m sure that has helped us win the day.”
