Leeds venue fears

The campaign to save Leeds Civic Theatre being run by the Yorkshire Post has received the support of the Theatres Trust in a bid to stop the venue being turned into a museum.

The organisation warned that amateur groups could be forced to close if they were forced out of theatres and acceptable alternatives could not be found.

Trust architect and planner Catherine Croft said: “Having places for amateurs to play is vital to maintain people’s interest in theatre. If we squeeze out the amateurs it will have a knock on effect on professional theatre.

“We’ve said in the past it isn’t really suited to being a museum; it’s much more suited for theatre use. “

The Civic Theatre site is being considered for the centre of a Leeds City Council bid for Lottery money to create a £20m museum which would be jointly housed at the Leeds Institute building and a purpose-built site elsewhere in the city.
