Keep out the conmen

Keep Out Conmen – it’s a simple message but already thousands of vulnerable elderly people are taking it on board thanks to the Basildon Evening Echo.

The Echo launched the campaign in January after a shocking spate ofincidents which saw pensioners conned out of cash, in many cases their life savings.

Police said that despite repeated warnings not to let anybody into their homes without proper identification, scores of people were still falling victim to clever conmen.

The Echo – with the support of Essex Police – decided action should be taken and launched a campaign to publicise every incident reported to raise awareness.

Stickers were printed and sent out to home care workers, Neighbourhood Watch volunteers and Age Concern to distribute to older people.

The Echo is encouraging neighbours, friends and relatives to put thestickers up inside front doors at the homes of the old and vulnerable.

They give advice on making sure only genuine callers were let into homes.

The stickers can also be picked up in libraries, community centres and leisure centres.

The Echo’s offices in Southend and Basildon are also carrying supplies.
