Journal urges councillors to stop and think

A Devon newspaper has launched a “stop and think” plea to planners as they prepare to decide on a crazy golf scheme for an area subject to flooding.

The North Devon Journal has stepped in and told planning committee members to hold fire on their decision.

Managing editor Andy Cooper has written to the committee urging it to wait until a full survey of the area, at Bradiford, had been carried out.

The golf course scheme would be close to a go-kart track which is being blamed for the current flooding problems.

Mr Cooper told North Devon District Council that it would be a big mistake to allow the plans and it would go against the spirit of previous agreements.

The Journal has been running a vigorous Stop and Think campaign over the flooding row and has spoken out to get an official survey into the problems.

The owners of the kart track have always denied their business affects the flow of water along the stream through Bradiford and a survey would help pinpoint the cause of the problem.

In an open letter to the committee Mr Cooper wrote: “There are still major concerns that insufficient data and facts have been presented to you to allow you to make a fair decision.”

Residents were pleased when the council decided to fund the survey – but the golf proposal and recommendation is being viewed as a setback.
