Jack Straw backs Leader initiatives

Home secretary Jack Straw has praised a Nelson Leader campaign to stamp out underage drinking and reduce the problem of nuisance children.

On a visit to Pendle, he offered his support for Operation Flock, a police initiative set up in response to the newspaper’s Cork It! campaign.

Mr Straw’s opposition counterpart Anne Widdecombe also threw her weight behind the campaign on a visit to local Conservatives.

Cork It! began in April after a series of high profile drink-related cases involving local youths.

The campaign prompted the police, youth clubs, schools and councillors to get together to discuss ways of curbing youth crime.

Operation Flock was the result of the talks and it was launched in September.

Sgt June Prophet, who played a major part in getting the initiative up and running said she was pleased the campaign had received Government recognition.
