Invitation to Lord McDonald

Transport minister Lord McDonald has been invited by the Harrogate Advertiser to see for himself the dangerous A61.

The paper is running a campaign to make the road safer and has invited the minister to join a reporter in a trip along the road between Harrogate and Ripon.

The paper said: “If he agrees to visit Harrogate, letters supporting the campaign and copies of both the Harrogate Advertiser and sister paper the Ripon Gazette, will be presented to help demonstrate the strength of public feeling in making the road safer.”

The request to meet the minister came in a week when driving was made more hazardous by torrential rain and flooding.

There are currently no direct Government initiatives to cut the number of crashes on the stretch but the police are committed to reducing fatalities on the roads by information and education.

They are also urging drivers to take more care, especially at well-known hotspots.
