If in doubt, keep them out

Safety advice is set to go into thousands of homes for free thanks to an initiative from the Sheffield Star.

The paper’s Beat the Bogus Callers campaign is distributing safety advice door hangers, packed with police-approved information and safety tips.

They will act as an instant safety reminder every time people open the door.

Around 100,000 free door hangers are being sent out inside copies of the paper.

Readers are being advised to hook one over their door handle as an eye-catching alert reminding them to take precautions as they answer the door.

Sheffield is plagued with an average of three or four bogus caller-burglaries every day and the South Yorkshire region comes close to topping the league tables of distraction burglaries nationwide.

The paper advises its readers: “The two-sided door-hangers feature clear, large-print safety advice on one side, and the utility companies’ telephone numbers on the other.

“There is even a space for you to fill in the number of your local police station.

“Please make full use of your door-hanger. By simply hooking it around your door handle, or hanging it in a prominent place near the door you use the most, you could save yourself from becoming the next victim of a bogus caller.”
