Homeworking scandal tackled

The Cornish Guardian’s campaign against bogus ‘homeworking’ scams has come in for praise in the House of Commons.

North Cornwall MP Paul Tyler saluted the paper as he supported the Outworking Bill, which he describes as being a way to outlaw schemes such as those targeted by the Cornish Guardian.

The newspaper began its campaign after a joint effort with the Aberdeen Press & Journal to expose a fraudulent scheme operating from Bodmin.

The newspapers published their findings on the company simultaneously, prompting MP Paul Tyler to support the Parliamentary bill.

During his speech in the Commons Mr Tyler paid tribute to the newspaper’s campaign and said: “In a rural area there are many retired people on low incomes, seasonal workers and those without transport for whom some additional income is very attractive.

“Working from or at home seems just the answer. Carers, tied to their homes by their commitments, are especially targeted for these bogus schemes.

“Of course, there are some that are genuine and worthwhile. But there are also some which take money off people with no real prospect of a return.”

The new legislation could be in place within a year depending on the date of the general election.
