Home Office backs Evening News bogus caller fight

The Home Office has backed a high profile campaign against bogus callers, set up by the Norwich Evening News.

John Denham MP, who has special responsibility for crime, has sent a letter praising the paper’s work after reading articles from the Keep The Thieves Out Campaign.

Mr Denham said: “I congratulate the Evening News for its Keep The Thieves Out campaign to raise awareness of this appalling crime.

“Bogus caller crime is one of the most distressing in our society. Victims are usually both vulnerable and trusting.

“The Evening News is doing its bit to raise awareness and provide practical information.

“Campaigns such as this give a strong message that bogus callers will not be tolerated in Norwich and help people feel safer in their homes.”

Evening News Editor David Bourn said: “This is just another example of how the police teaming up with a local newspaper can make a very potent crimefighting force.

“I believe it’s the duty of a local newspaper to look after its readers, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

“We have been delighted with the response to our campaign and it’s very gratifying to see it recognised by national Government.”

  • In his letter, Mr Denham said there were 12,000 reported cases of bogus caller crime in England and Wales last year. However, he said the true figure was probably higher because people were often too embarrassed to call the police.
