Herald campaign prompts Hoon visit

The Tamworth Herald’s campaign against violence has prompted a visit to the town from cabinet minister Geoff Hoon.

The defence secretary discussed local concerns over crime and anti-social behaviour in a direct response to the Herald’s initiative.

And during his visit he spent time talking to news editor Linda Ram, as well as local councillors, police officers and members of the public.

  • The MP told the Herald: “Obviously crime and disorder is of crucial significance and I know this is a major issue for Tamworth. I came here specifically to listen to what people have to say on the topic.”

During an hour-long debate at Tamworth’s Philip Dix Centre everyone at the meeting had the opportunity to put their views to the defence secretary.

Among the concerns raised were that violence and nuisance crimes on the increase, the need for higher visibility of authority figures on streets, and a lack of respect for authority from a minority of youngsters.
