Having a ball with the Star

A magical Press Ball thrown by the Evening Star has raised an impressive £33,000 for a Suffolk children’s charity.

That means the latest appeal has smashed its target by £13,000.

  • And in a speech at the event, editor Nigel Pickover revealed to revellers that over the last five years, the Ipswich-based paper’s readers have raised more than £400,000 for special causes.

The Press Ball was based around the theme of magic – and newspaper staff and guests waved their own magic wands to turn dreams into reality for around 20 special children.

The Ball was one of the biggest fundraising events of the year for Disability Care Enterprise and the money raised will be used to buy equipment to improve youngsters’ blighted lives.

Mr Pickover said: “Once again the Press Ball has realised – and far exceeded – our expectations. We wanted to raise £20,000 to help around 20 children and the result was phenomenal. This magic total will make an incredible difference to children’s lives.”

The efforts on the night, which included fun, games, a charity auction and a forum for donations, helped the latest campaign for SARS surpass the £25,000-mark.

Carolyne Morey, project director for Disability Care Enterprise, said: “As we are a local charity we always say that the support that these companies have given could help someone they know – it could be a neighbour, friend, or relative they are helping, someone on their own doorstep.”
