Guardian's fight for Cheam gathers support

The Sutton Guardian’s campaign to put Cheam back on the map has reached the top of the political ladder, with mayoral candidate Simon Huges taking its fight to the House of Commons.

The North Cheam-based newspaper launched its Proud to be Cheam campaign after the Royal Mail deleted it from its records, and the Liberal Democrat candidate has now given his backing to the fight to get Cheam recognised as a distinct postal district.

So far more than 170 local residents and businesses have shown their support for the Guardian’s campaign, by putting up posters and wrting letters and e-mails.

Many say they are fed up with receiving the wrong mail because of the Royal Mail decision, and there are fears that the ancient district could be wiped off the map for good.

Cheam MP Paul Burstow is also fighting to get the district recognised, and is consulting residents over proposed boundaries for the area to be defined as Cheam – which could lead to a ballot for recognition.

He said: “Thanks to the Sutton Guardian the Post Office can be in no doubt that it’s time to put Cheam back on the map.”
