Gazette pushes for road improvements

The Northumberland Gazette is campaigning to improve the state of the county’s roads.

The Audit Commission recently revealed that Northumberland’s roads were the worst in the country with only 36 per cent of dangerously damaged roads and pavements being repaired within 24 hours.

The Gazette is asking readers to notify them of black-spots so that the paper can then inform the county council.

Reporter Brian Daniel said: “The response so far has been pretty decent.

“Everyone thinks that the roads are really bad especially with pot holes and we are highlighting this to the council. We’ll just keep plugging away.”

Council budget cuts and the problem of having to maintain over 3,100 miles of roads in the county have been blamed for the deteriorating conditions.

A spokesman for Northumberland County Council said: “We have been successful in attracting £9.3m of extra funding from the Local Transport Plan to spend on road improvements.”
