Gazette nets £300,000 in 'biggest ever' appeal

The Somerset County Gazette is spearheading the biggest fundraising campaign in the paper’s history, to help cancer sufferers.

The paper has teamed up with Macmillan Cancer Relief to run the Cash for Cancer Relief appeal to raise £485,000 to aid the charity’s provision of cancer services in Somerset.

And the campaign has proved so successful that within four months it has already topped £300,000.

County Gazette editor-in-chief, Ken Bird, said: “All of us have been touched by cancer in some way and know someone who has suffered cancer or is undergoing treatment.

“The Cash for Cancer Relief campaign will make a real difference to those most in need.”

The campaign is being led by County Gazette news editor Tamsin Curtis, who last year successfully raised £120,000 for a drug education scheme for primary school pupils through another of the paper’s campaigns, and has won the personal support of Olympic swimmer Duncan Goodhew who lives in the county.

Money raised will be used to appoint four new cancer specialists at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, provide extra funding for cancer patient grant aid and create a dedicated meeting room for the cancer team at Yeovil District Hospital.

Michele Evans, fundraising manager for Macmillan in Somerset, said: “The response to the County Gazette’s Cash for Cancer Relief campaign has been fantastic.

“The campaign has not only helped bring money in but has also helped to highlight the work of Macmillan in Somerset and put the spotlight on cancer.

“We are very grateful for the County Gazette’s help and we are now on track to hit target by the end of the year.”
