Gazette is set to sparkle!

The Colchester Evening Gazette has launched a major new campaign to help add a touch of sparkle to the lives of youngsters on the children’s ward at Colchester General Hospital.

With the help of readers it’s hoped the Sparkle Appeal will raise £20,000 to help kit out out a state of the art sensory room as part of a modernisation being carried out of the ward.

The appeal was the brainchild of health reporter Lauren Spurgeon, deputy editor Liana Kyparissis and editor-in-chief Irene Kettle.

The room, which is likely to feature coloured bubble tubes, light boxes, gentle music and padded cushions, will be used to help calm children who find it difficult to deal with being in hospital or in strange places or as part of continued therapy for children with brain injuries.

It will cost £10,000 and the rest of the target amount will help buy new wardrobes which double as beds to be used by parents of small children needing to stay overnight along with a special hydraulic bath for severely disabled children.

A huge appeal has gone out to readers to get behind the Sparkle Appeal to donate funds and organise fundraising events in its honour in the hope that the target will be reached by Christmas.
