Gazette aims to Shop-A-Yob

The Hemel Hempstead Gazette has joined forces with its local Community Policing Team to try and curb the spiralling amount of vandalism in the area.

The paper has launched the Shop-A-Yob campaign after vandals sent the number of incidents of criminal damage to over 700 in just three months.

And now readers are being encouraged to hit back by reporting cases of vandalism to the police and the newspaper.

Gazette editor David Fledstein said: “There have been so many calls lately from people complaining about petty vandalism.

“Because the police force is undermanned, we wanted to give people the opportunity to do something and make a difference.”

The Gazette is hoping for a big response to the campaign so that it can build up a picture of the extent of the problem and hopefully bring the yobs to justice.

Mr Fledstein said: “We’ve asked people to come forward and give a reaction. People aren’t really aware of new antisocial behaviour orders that can be enforced. If we can alert people about this, something can be done.”
